- Description:PLEASE CREDIT: @katsbigadventure (IG) & youtube.com/channel/UCYk17TwWy4LdUCJqz6ImlEw My fiance Cam and myself are ocean addicts. Every free moment we have, you'll find us on our 4.6m tinny either fishing or diving/spearfishing. We like to live sustainably off the ocean as much as we can. We live in Broome in north-Western Australia with some of the best fishing in the world. We were on a trip exploring some of the most remote and beautiful places in Australia. We spent our days camping on beaches, foraging for oysters, diving and spearfishing on reefs, as well as rod and reel fishing. Our target species this day was barramundi. We were in our tinny and had found a creek on google maps that we wanted to explore. The whole time we were out there, we were on guard for saltwater crocodiles as we had been told about them. However crocodiles look a lot like sticks! Until they move... So the whole time, Cam and I would say “croc or stick?”. I was the one to actually spot this stick-odile and after going back and fourth, I said to Cam “don’t worry about it, it’s just a stick”. So we drove past the stick with our lure out the back (we were trolling, which means you have your lure and line hanging a fair distance off the back of the boat, and then you wind it in when you hook a fish) and all of a sudden, the stick turned. We realised it was a croc and quickly tried to wind out lure in (it was our lucky lure! And we didn’t want to find out what would happen if a croc ate it). The croc chased the lure all the way to our boat. We have been around a fair few crocs living up at The Kimberley, mainly big ones, and they’re pretty chill most of the time, so I didn’t think too much of it. We record all our adventures anyways for our friends and family to see, and we had just started up a YouTube channel, so I turned on my GoPro and started filming. The croc came right up to the boat and took a snap at the lure before turnings its head, it looked me right in the eyes and then lunged at me. He got his feet over the side and kind of just hung there with his mouth wide open. The whole thing lasted for probably only a few seconds, but it felt like time stood still. I was able to have a full conversation in my head about what to do next. My first option, was to push him off with my GoPro stick. But I could see his back legs almost in the boat too, and I was worried if he grabbed hold of the GoPro stick, he could use that as leverage to get in. So I decided against it. I decided to wait. I also knew that he needed just one more flick of his tail to get into the boat, so what do I do then? Well, Cam (my fiancé) was on the top part of tinny, he had the high ground, he was safe. It was just in trouble. I decided that if the croc came in, I jumped out. Crocs are very territorial, so I knew there was no other crocs nearby. I also knew the croc would struggle to get over the seat and out of the boat again, so when it looked like he was heading out that way, I had enough time to pull myself back into the boat as he jumped out. But then before I knew it, the crocodile slowly slid off the side of the boat and back into the water. Cam starts yelling at me “drive! Drive! Drive!” as I quickly try to pull myself together and drive away, while the croc just started at us. It was an incredible experience and one that definitely left us in a state of shock. The adrenaline didn’t wear off for a good hour. Something important to take away from it though was about complacency in The Kimberley waters. Something we had taken for granted and we won’t be making that mistake again. They are incredible, unpredictable and powerful animals that should be treated with respect.
