  • Description:PLEASE CREDIT: @willredgroveart (TT) @will_redgrove_illustration (IG) I am a muralist and community artist based in east London. This last year has hit a lot of us in the creative industries hard and I know a lot of people have been struggling with the lack of work, the growing anxieties about the future and the impact this last year has had, and will have on those from less fortunate backgrounds. I for one have had to leave my studio and try and make do with working from home. In order to keep being creative and to look after my mental health I decided to turn one of the walls in my bedroom into a mural practise wall. Every week in January, February and March I did a new painting, and at the start of each new week I would paint over the last one and start all over again. Having a project like this got me through some really difficult times. It gave me the motivation to get up each morning and try to be productive during a pretty bleak winter. Over the weeks I not only improved my painting skills but I also got better at recording what I was doing, teaching myself how to edit simple videos that I now have on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. A few of these videos were seen by local community groups and I now focus on creating murals and workshops for local community centres, youth clubs and schools. Next month I will be working with the mental health charity Mind in one of the UK’s poorest towns. Murals and street art have always had a tradition of speaking about social issues and, for me, being able to focus on giving opportunities, joy and creativity to those who are struggling is my own small contribution during this difficult time. I was raised by a single mum in Hackney so how important it is - for young people especially, to have positive creative outputs and opportunities. I think art can be just as important as sport for social mobility and it would be a tragedy to have a whole generation of artists lost because they didn’t receive the chances that other have. Cheers, Will
